New Rules from Bill Maher Aug. 7, 2009

Bill Maher gives his New Rules this week and really takes on the dumbing down of America. I have to agree with him. We have dumbed down and it is pitiful. People act and seem to celebrate the fact they know nothing, and act proud of the fact that history means nothing to them.

When I first started this blog that was one of the things I talked about, was what did we know or forget in the years from school. But they don't teach these things in school like they used to. We used to have a full Civics course and had to learn the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the State I lived in. That had to be done in 9th grade. If not, you didn't get to move on.

Listen to the facts he recites and to the statistics, it is scary to think we are this dumb, and I mean dumb about our history and our country and it's leaders. But we have let ourselves and our children become this way. We have to take that responsiblity on ourselves and fix this problem.

thanks for finding this video. I stole it!! Damn youtube took it down after I posted early this morning.

As for our kids being taught properly in school - what a joke. My son is highly intelligent, but will be the first to admit that he had no formative timeline as to historical events.

In my day, we learned history in a chronological manner, carrying through to high school and current events. This is a shame. At least I can answer and educate my adult kids regularly.

that was brilliant. this country really has been dumbed down, and i think it's by design. rethuglicans like their constituents ignorant, so they do everything they can to make sure the unwashed masses remain uneducated.

I have to agree that there has been a deliberate movement by the GOP to handicap the public schools to the point that they can do little other than to focus on what's on "the test." No Child Left Behind has made it clear that its objective is for all schools to eventually become "failing," and that'll make it a very simple process to build up the voucher movement. There was a time, before federal interference, when schools were locally controlled, and our nation turned out well-rounded students. Sooner or later, it'll be evident that NCLB isn't working, and we'll go back to that practice. But in the meantime, a whole generation of kids will suffer.
