Iraqi Group FIles 200 Lawsuits Against Rumsfeld in JORDAN

If David Gregory was REALLY a journalist... He might ask King Abdullah about this:

AMMAN, Dec 15, 2008 (AFP) - A Jordan-based Iraqi rights group said on Monday it has filed 200 lawsuits against US former defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld and American security firms for their alleged role in torturing Iraqis.

Ali Qeisi, head of the group the "Society of Victims of the US Occupation in Iraq," said the cases, relating to torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners, have been recently filed in federal courts in Virginia, Michigan and Maryland.

Wow! It was just a matter of time-- if the US can't get it together to prosecute war crimes, at least the International community seems to be on top of it.
It's embarrassing the US is not heading up this prosecution against it's own criminals.

Thanks, Annette, for the kudos in your other post! Your blog has become a must-read for me, too - great citations and sources, terrific commentary. Thanks so much for the shout-out!

My question: how much more proof do we need before our own nation will take action on the whole torture mess???

I think most Americans are waiting on Obama to act on the torture issue, but because of the separation of powers and checks and balances, the ball rests in the DOJ's court. Pressure needs to be placed on Holder to appoint a special prosecutor. I think little action has been publicly announced because President Obama believes in knowing as much as he possibly can about an issue before he takes action, and I am fairly confident he has spoke with Holder about this. I'd rather have a decision based on thorough research which results in prosecutions for war crimes than a rush job resulting in the exoneration of all involved.
And, again, Annette, thanks for bringing this information to our attention. Good work.

amazing the world is getting their act together on the criminality of Bush while we bog ourselves down in minutia and partisanship. we truly have an ineffective govt - committed not to helping the people but keeping the status quo?
