THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PLEASANT HILL HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO 7 PM CDT SATURDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

AS A VERY POWERFUL UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE TRACKS SOUTH OF THE REGION TONIGHT... MOISTURE WILL BEGIN TO SURGE NORTH AND OVERSPREAD AN UNSEASONABLY COLD AIRMASS. PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY BEGIN AS RAIN BEFORE MIDNIGHT FRIDAY... AND QUICKLY CHANGE OVER TO A WINTRY MIX AFTER MIDNIGHT. PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY BECOME ALL HEAVY SNOW BY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

SNOW... HEAVY AT TIMES THEN THEN EXPECTED THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAY SATURDAY. A FEW THUNDERSTORMS CANNOT BE RULED OUT... WITH SNOWFALL RATES LOCALLY EXCEEDING TWO INCHES PER HOUR. BLUSTERY NORTH WINDS OF 20 TO 25 MPH WILL ALSO CREATE AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW.

TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS MAY VARY ANYWHERE FROM 6 TO 8 INCHES ACROSS THE WARNING AREA BEFORE THE SNOW COMES TO AN END LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. LOCALIZED AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 8 INCHES WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE ALONG A NARROW TRACK IN THE WARNING AREA. THIS HEAVY SNOW WILL LIKELY REDUCE VISIBILITIES BELOW ONE HALF MILE AND CREATE VERY HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS SATURDAY MORNING.

IN ADDITION... THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BE OF A HEAVY AND WET NATURE. DUE TO THE RECENT FOLIAGE ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE MISSOURI RIVER... TREES WILL BE EXTREMELY SUSCEPTIBLE TO HEAVY SNOW... WHICH MAY LEAD TO POWER OUTAGES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL... KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD... AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

More Information

... SIGNIFICANT EARLY SPRING HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED SATURDAY...

.THE LATEST DATA CONTINUE TO DEPICT AN IMPRESSIVE LATE SEASON WINTER STORM THAT WILL BRING MAJOR AND POTENTIALLY CRIPPLING SNOWS TO MUCH OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS AND LOWER MISSOURI RIVER VALLEY TODAY AND SATURDAY.

A POWERFUL STORM SYSTEM WILL TRACK FROM THE TEXAS PANHANDLE TOWARD WESTERN ARKANSAS BY SATURDAY MORNING... BEFORE LIFTING NORTHEAST TOWARD ST. LOUIS ON SATURDAY. THE COMBINATION OF UNSEASONABLY COLD AIR TO THE NORTH AND WEST OF THE STORM TRACK... ALONG WITH VERY DEEP MOISTURE ALOFT... AND THE INTENSE ENERGY AND LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DISTURBANCE... WILL LEAD TO BANDS OF VERY HEAVY SNOW FROM SOUTHERN KANSAS... ACROSS A LARGE PORTION OF EASTERN KANSAS AND WESTERN MISSOURI TOWARD CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST MISSOURI. ALTHOUGH PERIODS OF RAIN AND POSSIBLY SLEET MAY INITIALLY MIX WITH THE SNOW LATE FRIDAY NIGHT... HEAVY SNOW WITH TOTALS IN EXCESS OF 6 INCHES... AND LOCALLY EXCEEDING 10 INCHES... CAN BE EXPECTED OVER MUCH OF THE WARNING AREA ON SATURDAY.

Oh, my goodness. We had a huge snow at the beginning of March that didn't turn out as badly as we thought it would, but we were snowed in for a day. I hope that's the worst you experience in this one. Keep us posted, please!
