Our First Lady Went to Fort Bragg, NC

First Lady Michelle Obama visits BraggImage by Army.mil via Flickr

Michelle travels to Fort Bragg to visit with families of military. This is from an AOL report. Just WOW.. She really impresses me with what she says and does. Hitting the right tone and notes every time. Bringing out the problems, and pointing out things we could all do to help.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -First lady Michelle Obama, venturing away from Washington to define her White House role, called on the American people Thursday to embrace the military families in their communities.
In her first major advocacy mission, the wife of President Barack Obama spent the afternoon visiting with soldiers and their families at North Carolina's sprawling Fort Bragg. She then told a crowd of community leaders in nearby Fayetteville that Americans need to reach out to members of the military.
"Our soldiers and their families have done their duty — and they do it without complaint," Mrs. Obama said. "And we as a grateful nation must do ours — do everything in our power to honor them by supporting them."
Mrs. Obama has said she wants to focus on military families during her time as first lady. She spent time hugging military members at a dining facility and talking with their spouses in a private session — all in a support center that had some windows boarded up with plywood.
Later she visited a classroom of kids, ages 3 to 5, at a Fort Bragg child development center. She gave an animated reading of "The Cat in the Hat" — a book she used to read to her daughters — and then did a few minutes of crafts with kids preparing "Thank You" cards for wounded soldiers.
"Military family members have their own special courage and strength," she said later.
To emphasize her commitment to the military community, Mrs. Obama also gave her first network television interview since her husband took office, sitting down at Fort Bragg with ABC's "Good Morning America."
In the interview, to be broadcast Friday, she said she wanted military families to know they have a friend in the White House.
"It hurts. It hurts," the first lady said of hearing about military families on food stamps. "These are people who are willing to send their loved ones off to, perhaps, give their lives — the ultimate sacrifice. But yet, they're living back at home on food stamps. It's not right, and it's not where we should be as a nation."
ABC released excerpt of the interview late Thursday.
"I think that's one of my jobs, is to try and shed some light on some of these issues," she told ABC, "to not just be in that conversation with military spouses and hear those stories, but to take that information back to the administration to share it with the nation, so that we can think again about how we can better support these families."
In her speech, Mrs. Obama that military members aren't just confined to bases and the surrounding community, noting that the families of National Guard and Army Reserve personnel are struggling to cope in all parts of the country.
"I encourage everyone out there, within the sound of my voice, to reach out on your own — through schools, PTA, Little L agues, churches, workplaces — and find out if there's a soldier or a soldier's family right there in the community who needs a little extra support," Mrs. Obama said in her speech. "They're there. Something as simple as offering help with car pool duty can make the world of difference to a parent who's trying to hold the family together during a very stressful time."
Sgt. 1st Class Ashlyn Lewis, 31, of Indianapolis, said it was a remarkable experience to see the first lady in the cafeteria at Fort Bragg. She said the Obamas have a lot of work ahead of them to shore up deficiencies in the military's medical system.
"Right now the biggest concern would be taking care of the vets, making sure that the people that are coming home are getting the proper medical care — not just for the Iraqi or Afghanistan vets, but also, there are a lot of Vietnam vets who haven't been receiving the proper care," Lewis said. The Obamas are "headed in the right direction," Lewis added, "but it's going to be a lot of work."

Nov. 22, 1963 the day that changed the world.

I should have done this the other day. At least 2 days ago. Nov. 22, 1963, 45 years ago. The day I saw my dad cry for the 1st time. The time I felt afraid of what was going to happen to the world and our country. My dad thought John Kennedy was a great man, a great president. He was so upset by him getting killed.

I remember when it happened. I was at school, I was 11 years old, in 5th grade. I was afraid, I imagine so were a lot of others in school, my teacher let me go to the office and call home. I don't remember if we got to leave early or if we stayed in school. But, I do remember talking to mom on the phone.

Then, later when dad was home from work and we were watching the news on TV he cried, I don't think he liked President Johnson. But, we watched them swear him in on the airplane.

It was a scary time for our country. No one knew what was going to happen next. There were a lot of suspicion, conspiracy theories, still are for that matter as to what or who was behind it. Could one man have done it?? Will the truth ever be known??

John Kennedy was a good man. Yes, he had his faults. No one is perfect. I don't think it was as bad as people like to say it was now, at least not that I remember, but that was a different time then. What might our country have been like if he had not been killed?? What would have been different?? What would have been the same??

Listen to the speech he gave at his inaugural, it is in 2 parts, the 1st about 10 minutes the 2nd about 5. I had heard clips of it before, mostly the "Ask not what your country" portion, that I am sure everyone has heard, but I think this is the 1st time I have ever heard the entire speech. No wonder I have heard people say that Barack Obama reminds them of John Kennedy. They both have a way with words. I don't know if Pres. Kennedy wrote his speeches like Barack writes a lot of his or not, but the words are eerily similar. No, not in that way, just that they seem to have some of the same ideals, the same visions for this great country and our people. How wonderful.

My dad thought so much of John Kennedy, and I think a lot of Barack Obama. My mom didn't think my dad would vote for Barack but I think he would have. Yeah, my dad would have been one of those who said he would never have voted for the black guy, then walked into the voting booth and voted FOR the black guy...lol That reverse Bradley effect. I miss my dad.

One of the regrets I have, is living in Dallas and never taking him to see the place where Kennedy was shot. But then again, he said he didn't want to go there. We talked about it. He said it wasn't something he wanted to see. I did get to take him to Arlington. He got to see his grave, see the eternal flame. He cried then too.

Emails from a friend.

Well today I got 2 emails from a friend. She is a Republican. Told me she was a fan of the Gov. awhile back. Thought she was the best person in the race. Her words not mine...lol She had also told me a few years back how great she thought President Bush was. Of course I expressed my dismay with him. We have been friends, well let me explain this a little.

I say friends, we are on line friends. We have never met face to face. We communicate by email. We have spoken on the phone, we planned to meet a couple of times but it just never worked out for us to get together. She lives in Florida and even when I was there it was still a couple of hours drive and it just never was convenient for me to get to her.

Anyway, we have talked for a long, long time. Well over 10 years, she has known I wasn't happy with, as I called him, her president for all this time. But even though I didn't agree with everything he was still my President too and I respect that. We have discussed it. We discussed my opposition to going to Iraq, she knew I didn't think it was a good idea, I never believed in it, never thought they had WMD's, never believed the story that they were involved in 9-11, never bought the whole story that Pres. Bush and Co. put out. But, what could I do, other than voice my displeasure as I did, often and loud...lol Even to my own daughter who also is a fan of the current President. But that is another story. So, my friend and I have agreed several times to disagree. Mostly we have gotten along pretty well. We just don't discuss politics.

We have an agreement or had an agreement, that we wouldn't send each other political emails, jokes and the like. Well for the most part things have gone on very well until today, when she sent me two. The 1st was to all who you think or know that voted for Obama. It is a letter about the Tax Revolt of 2012. Granddad's letter to his granddaughter.

Basically it says, that due to the tax increase they believe is coming their way they had to fire the Hispanic maid. They can't buy her (the granddaughter) gifts, give her handouts, all the thousands of dollars in food, housing, cash, clothing, etc, etc and they are just going to be next to living on the street themselves. Just because the granddaughter was one of the youth vote in the election who voted for Obama, she caused this. It is all on her head. So if she needs money for gas, tires, assistance for rent or anything else, call the switchboard at the White House and let President Obama help you out in return for your vote cause Grand is broke due to the tax increase.

So, that was the first email I got. Of course I was a little miffed to say the least. But I didn't email her back yet. I let it go. Just thought about it and went on. Thinking to myself about the economic situation we are in. Thinking about the deficit we are in right now. Thinking about the spending that has gone on over the last 8 years while the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has been there. But still didn't bother to send an answer to her email.

Then I thought about the war in Iraq, how many lives have been lost, the cost of the war, both human and money. The injuries and the soldiers who will suffer for the rest of their lives, the families who will care for them, the families who won't care for the ones that won't come home. I thought about my dad, my uncle and then my other uncle. Who all fought in WWII. Both my uncles were in the Navy, on different ships. Uncle Johnny a cook on an LST, injured, reported missing, awarded the purple heart. Came home with metal fragments still in his body. Died in the VA hospital in Wilmington, DE. Never got a dime of compensation from the VA, because they said he wasn't in a combat zone, had no proof of his injury, due to the fire at St Louis that destroyed all the records. He fought in the war, then fought for 60 years to get what was owed to him and died with it still owed to him. My uncle Fred, stationed in the Pacific on board the Saginaw Bay. He was in Seeadler Harbour when the Mt. Hood blew up. Injured his back, given a bottle of aspirin and told to come back if he needed more. But they didn't have time to write it up, he wasn't bleeding, they were trying to take care of the dying and the ones more injured. Now, he has had 4 back surgeries, has stomach problems from all the aspirin he took, yet because they never documented it he can get nothing. So, again, fought for his country, 1st denial, he wasn't in a combat zone. On board a ship, in the Pacific Ocean, the Saginaw Bay was awarded 5 battle stars for her service, yet he wasn't in a combat zone, they were at Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Leyte Gulf, and the South China Sea. Fight for your country then fight for 60 years to get what they promise you, to take care of you. This was a promise made by Abraham Lincoln.

My dad was in Europe. He finally got his 100% Service Connected Disability. He thought Mom would be taken care of after he was gone. Well, guess what dad, they changed the rules, instead of 5 years it's 10 now. so mom gets nothing. Again, he had to fight for almost 60 years to get his disability. But, he finally got it. How sad that we treat our vets so badly.

Then is when I got mad. At the bottom of this email was her signature. It is on all her emails, but today it just hit me really wrong. After complaining in this email about the so called raising of the taxes that might be done. Because with all that is going on that is not really even being discussed and really everyone grabbed onto that and it was really just letting President Bush's tax cuts expire. Big whoopee...3 whole % It was this that really set my teeth on edge.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO GIVE THEIR LIVES TO KEEP US FREE!

How sad and pathetic is that? We are all for being patriotic and waving the flag and being all noble, but don't expect me to pay for it. Well who is supposed to pay for it then?? If not the wealthy or the most affluent, who, the Hispanic cleaning lady they are complaining about firing?? The granddaughter they are griping about helping out?? The student, the cashier at the gas station, at Wal-Mart, at Walgreen's, who???

These men and women who are fighting and the families who send them off without thought or pause, or without us even taking the time to consider what they are sacrificing. Oh sure we give lip service to it, but do we really think about it? Most don't, we take for granted what they give us every day. Just as we do our taxes. We don't think about it, and we won't think about it if they go up or even if they go down. Yes, we might notice it the first time. But, after that we won't even notice, it will become second nature and no one will even care. It is just something to gripe about, something to pick at like a scab on a sore.

The 2nd email soon. I promise....lol

This one is long enough

Some people amaze me.

I know, I shouldn't be amaze by stupidity, but I am. Yes, at my age, I can still be amazed. People who call PE Obama the Messiah. Saying that we who voted for him "all believe that" just amazes me. Just ran across one. He has a blog, with pictures of Sarah Palin plastered everywhere, stories about her everywhere, goes to other blogs and yells at people who dare to post anything about her, insulting them, making rude, hateful mean and viscous statements about them if they in anyway say something he feels is in any way demeaning.

Then you go to his page and he says he is a Christian, he is wonderful, he is a conservative, she is going to be POTUS in '12, "you betcha", and like I said if there is 1 picture there must be 50 pictures, references, web sites, stories, just line after line about her, most of it debunked stories, told from a very biased view, attacking anyone who dares to say anything against or showing her in a negative light. Even if it is true. Like the turkey pardon. He has it spun so far out of whack you don't even know it is the same story. But, he has attacked everyone from Huffington, MSNBC, KTUU, even a blogger in Alaska that tried to defend the Gov partially. All, because he decided no one could tell the story but him. Then when I tried to defend the blogger, I was attacked and called a "goose stepping member of Obama Nation" and a "neo-Bolsheviks". So, here we are.

Like I said, I am amazed. He is in love. In love with the image of a woman. Because that is all she is. He has no clue who she really is, he is in love with the image she presented during the campaign for VP, and he thinks that was the real person. I am not sure what he would do if he ever came down to earth. He and the millions of others. One of these days the bubble is going to burst and they will find out what they really have, their eyes will open and they will finally figure out they are in love with an image, not a real person.
